Our values guide and motivate our attitudes and actions

Values are your personal reference guide

In this episode I delve into the fascinating subject of VALUES and their importance to a really happy personal and professional life.

Values are the fundamental drivers that guide and motivate our attitudes and actions.

We each have unique set of values, and they help us to determine what is important to us; they describe the personal qualities we aim to embody; they direct the sort of person we want to be; and the manner in which we treat ourselves, others and the world around us. So, they are pretty important!

In this episode, I walk you through:

  • A definition of what values are and how they work
  • What happens when we try and do something that does not align with our values!
  • How identifying and understanding your values can provide you with a really amazing personal reference guide or checklist, which helps you make career and life choices that align deeply
  • A window into my own soul, where I share examples of my own values, what they mean, and how they impact and direct my professional and personal life
  • How to determine your own values and put them in order of priority
  • How to translate your values into practical requirements for both your career and life

If you have never done a values elicitation exercise, I also walk you through a simple way to get started so come join me!

Business Ideas Can Get Better with Time, Reflection and Fresh Eyes

Believe in Your Idea Enough to Commit to Action

Do you ever dream of becoming an entrepreneur, but wonder what it takes, whether you’ve got it in you, when the timing might be right, and whether you could really bring your ideas to life?

If so, this episode is for you. I’ve asked one of my favourite people, my awesome friend Paul Spiers, to share his entrepreneurial journey with us.

Paul is a serial entrepreneur. He’s founded and experimented with different businesses over the years, including a marketing communications agency and a surf clothing brand.

Today, he’s a passionate advocate of principled leadership and powerful purpose, working as a global keynote speaker, a conference and panel moderator, and he’s the founder and host of The New P&L® podcast, which is an internationally respected, top 5% business podcast series that covers the intersection of leadership, culture, people and purpose.

Come and join us as Paul shares the reality behind his entrepreneurial journey, how he ignites his creativity to come up with ideas and pivot when necessary, and why it’s never too late to act on an idea that you’ve had for years.

In this episode we discuss

  • The “ugly truth” of Paul’s entrepreneurial journey and what it’s REALLY been like.
  • The different businesses that Paul has run over time and how he gets the ideas to start up something new, or to change something and pivot.
  • What motivates Paul to keep going, even when the going gets tough.
  • Paul’s current work, which centres around his concept of The New P&L (Principles and Leadership), how it came about, and we get into how he actually FEELs about this work he does (which has taken over a decade in coming to fruition).

I love the part of our conversation where I asked Paul whether he was worried that he’d waited too long to bring the New P&L idea to fruition and he said:

“One of the key points I make is that just because an idea isn’t right for right now, it doesn’t mean it is not right forever. Because things change all the time: circumstances, environment, commercial markets, and also new people come in and look at those ideas with fresh eyes.

So, we have to keep those ideas, curate those ideas and revisit them with those fresh sets of eyes. If I’d just given way to The New P &L seven years earlier, I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing today. And I love it more than anything I’ve ever done, but it relied on me to hold that idea, to revisit it, and then look out for something serendipitous that would link the idea and the action together.”

I love that. Gives us all hope that we do have TIME to curate something different for ourselves and that there isn’t a rush ❤️
