How age is on my side. Starting a new career journey in my 50s

Age does not define your career choices

Do you long to make meaningful career or life changes, but worry you’re too old and it’s far too late?

If you’re telling yourself you’ve missed the boat and it’s not realistic or possible to effect change, whatever age you are at, this episode is for you.

I am joined by my former client, Anna Perkins, who (and she won’t mind me telling you) has started a new career journey in her early 50s.

Anna has been a marketeer for 25+ years, and while there’s a lot about this role she still really enjoys, she knew that if it’s all she continued to do until the end of her working days, it would kill her soul (her words, not mine!)

After some deep, introspective work to dig out her innate strengths, skills and passions, and identify what would deliver a true sense of meaning and purpose for her, Anna is now immersed in the world of mental health, and is training to become a counsellor.

In this episode, I chat to Anna about how she came to choose this new career path; the steps she’s taking towards it; how she’s found being back in the classroom and what she has learnt about herself through that process, and importantly for a lot of people, how age is actually on her side!

Pull up a chair and come join us.

In this episode we discuss

  • What life looked like for Anna before we helped her pinpoint a new career journey that would feed her soul
  • The themes that became apparent for Anna as we dug into her strengths, transferable skills, personal values, and innate passions
  • How Anna came to realise working in the mental health space really appealed to her, and how she kick-started her work journey in this area through research, volunteering, and new qualifications
  • What it was like for Anna returning to the classroom in her 50s, and how she had to get comfortable with being vulnerable and not being the expert in the room
  • How and why Anna now believes that age is truly on her side

This is an insightful conversation, where we also discuss how age is seen as an inhibitor for people looking for longed-for career and life changes, but why it actually isn’t! Anna’s story is a great example of how age and experience actually bring huge benefits, and that it is never to late to go after what you truly want!

A bit more about Anna Perkins

EP018 Guest Anna Perkins

After a short spell as a secondary school teacher, Anna Perkins has spent 25 years in Marketing. She’s worked for some of the world’s biggest brands as well as small start-ups leading teams with a passion for brand development, messaging and clear communications.

Anna has always had an interest in knowing what makes people tick and, in more recent years she has got involved in mental health, both through formal training as well as being the champion and MH team leader in her current role. This started the journey she is now on, which includes working as a mediator, volunteering with Cruse Bereavement and Papyrus, and training to be a counsellor. This has brought together her passions for psychology, helping people and supporting them in their toughest times.

When not reading counselling and psychology books (both for her course and for fun) she reads fiction, borrows a dog for a weekly walk, tries to encourage her kooky cat to have a cuddle (usually unsuccessfully) and enjoys dancing, going to the theatre and live music.

If you would like to know more about Anna or would like to connect with her, please do find her on LinkedIn, or visit one of her two websites: Coffee and Marketing (for her marketing work), or Forseti Mediation (for her mediation work).

Burnout Recovery, Finding Balance & Customising Your Life

Don’t play the game, if you don’t want to

Have you ever experienced burnout? How did it look and feel like for you? Did you know that it can be experienced differently – person to person?

In this episode, I invite my old work colleague and friend, Sarah Allison, to share her burnout and recovery story, which saw her redefine what her life and work looked like in major ways.

Sarah has had a rich and varied career, working for global companies to charities and start-ups, mostly in the technology and environmental sectors.

But, after experiencing serious health burn out, she has customised the way she lives and works, and has forged her own incredible path – one that sees her living half the year in the UK, and the other half in India, and mixing corporate consultancy work with holistic healing work through Shiatsu and Qigong.

Sarah generously shares her personal burnout experience, what it taught her about what she needed and wanted, how she forged her “portfolio career”, and how she found the courage to follow her own path.

Come join us. Sarah’s story is fascinating.

In this episode we discuss

What led to Sarah’s burnout. Burnout is something a lot of people feel on the edge of, or are suffering with and trying to manage, so I was curious to know what caused it for her.

  • What burnout looked and felt like for Sarah personally.
  • “The great unravelling”, as Sarah calls it, when she realised that she was playing a game that she didn’t want to play, which was having a serious impact on her health.
  • How Sarah listened to her intuition and started to make major changes, which included moving to India before the pandemic.
  • How Sarah built her portfolio career from a practical and financial point of view, mixing corporate work with holistic healing work through Shiatsu and Qigong.
  • What Sarah’s journey has been like, up to what she is doing today.

Towards the end of our conversation Sarah also shares what living this new life has meant for her and what it has enabled her to be and to do.

If you are looking for inspiration on trusting your instincts, defining success on your own terms, and pursuing what feels good, come and join us. You won’t be disappointed!

A bit more about Sarah Allison

EP017 Guest Sarah Allison

Sarah Allison is part corporate geek, part holistic health worker who has taken seemingly radical steps to find balance in her life – steps that she believes anyone can take.

She now lives between a sleepy village in southern England and the jungles of tropical Goa.

In 2019, she left a 15-year corporate PR career working with some of the world’s largest technology companies, to pursue a new chapter that saw her recover from burnout, find her own rhythm and live through the global pause for 2.5 years in India.

During this time, her holistic Practitioner work flourished and she re-defined the ingredients for health and happiness, on her terms. She finds peace and fulfilment in nature, and now pursues work that nourishes her mind, energy and soul.

Four key signs, warning of a disconnection from your happiness path

Define your happiness markers

In this episode I’m coming at you solo to talk about the notion of HAPPINESS.

It’s something we are all seeking, but it’s a nebulous term, and for many, working out what it actually looks and feels like, and what it involves for us, is really hard to pin down.

Personally, I spent MANY years in the dark, with no idea what real happiness looked like for me, and now I have a lot of clients who come to me because they’re in a similar position – feeling really disconnected from what makes them happy, either from a work or personal point of view, or both.

In this episode I talk you through what causes this disconnect; the signs to look out for that will indicate that you’re veering away from your own happiness path; and I share an idea for how to reconnect more deeply with your own intrinsic happiness drivers.

So if you’re feeling like your happiness quotient could do with a boost or an outright overhaul, come and join me.

In this episode I talk about

  • A definition of happiness and more specifically ‘adventures in happiness’
  • How we commonly get disconnected from what makes us happy (hint: it involves a lot of ‘adulting’!)
  • The four signs that indicate you have become disconnected from your true happiness markers:
    • Persistent malaise (you are so tired, all of the time)
    • Sadness (that you just can’t justify or put your finger on)
    • Anxiety (ongoing low or high levels of anxiety)
    • Physical illness (physical dis-ease)
  • The importance of pinpointing your own intrinsic drivers (identifying the personal driving forces that hold the most meaning for you)
  • I walk you through an intrinsic drivers exercise. Here’s the visualisation audio I talk about in the episode, which may help you access ideas and memories.

Be sure to listen to the full episode – it’s only 13 minutes! – and try out the exercise to uncover your intrinsic drivers for creating your own adventures in happiness 😊
